What is SumUp Terminal? Price, fees, printer and 4G (2026)

Kort-Terminal redaksjonenUpdated 10 min read

SumUp Terminal is a standalone card terminal with its own touchscreen, built-in receipt printer and its own mobile connection. You take cards and print receipts without a phone, tablet or fixed internet — for 1.49% per payment, with no monthly fee and no contract.

Here we cover what Terminal actually is, what the printer and 4G connection mean in practice, how it differs from Solo Lite and Register, and what it costs to use — so you know whether it is the right device before you buy.

What is SumUp Terminal?

Terminal combines three things in one handheld device: card reader, screen and receipt printer. Where Solo Lite relies on your phone for both the app and the connection, Terminal is fully self-contained. It accepts the payment methods customers use every day:

  • Chip and PIN on debit and credit cards
  • Contactless card payments
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay
  • Visa and Mastercard

On the screen you add products — you can snap a photo of an item with the camera to create it quickly — track stock with low-stock alerts, give staff their own profiles, handle tips and refunds and view sales reports in real time. Everything is linked to your SumUp business account, so you can see total sales from another screen too. The battery is built to last a full working day.

Printer and 4G: what sets Terminal apart from a basic card reader

  • Built-in receipt printer: a 58 mm thermal printer in the device prints a receipt or order ticket straight away. Customers can still choose a receipt by SMS or email.
  • Its own mobile connection: a 4G SIM with data is included, with WiFi as backup. The device switches to the strongest network by itself, so you can take payments at markets, in a food truck or at events with no fixed line.

Solo Lite, Terminal or Register?

In short: Solo Lite for the lowest price with a phone, Terminal for standalone selling with paper receipts, and Register for a fixed counter.

Solo LiteTerminalRegister
Needs a phoneYes, via BluetoothNoNo
Receipt printerNoYes, built inAs an add-on
Own mobile dataNoYes, 4G + WiFiNo, needs WiFi
Device priceLowestMid-rangeHighest
Best forLowest price, mobile useStandalone selling with receiptsFixed counter, full POS

All three have the same transaction fee and no contract. There is also SumUp Solo, a standalone terminal with its own connection but no printer. Rule of thumb: if you need a paper receipt on the spot, go for Terminal. If digital receipts are fine, Solo or Solo Lite will do — read more in our Solo Lite guide.

How to get started

  • Create a SumUp account in the free SumUp Business app or online.
  • Switch on Terminal. It connects straight away over 4G, or you can join WiFi. Log in with your account.
  • Add your products on screen, or photograph them to build your catalogue quickly.
  • Run a test payment with your own card and print the receipt.

Payouts go to your SumUp business account the next business day. Register well before opening — your business must be verified before the first payouts are released.

What does SumUp Terminal cost to use?

The price has two parts: a one-off sum for the hardware and a fee per payment. In practice, you only pay when you actually sell.

CostSumUp TerminalWhat it means for you
HardwareOne-off — check current priceYou own the device, no rental
Transaction fee1.49% per paymentYou only pay when you sell
Monthly feeNoneNo fixed monthly costs
ContractNoneYou can stop any time
Betalinger Plus (optional)0.79% for NOK 349/monthPays off at high volume

Worked example: if you take NOK 30,000 in card sales a month, you pay NOK 447 in fees (30,000 × 1.49%) — and nothing in months without sales. With Betalinger Plus the fee drops to NOK 237 (0.79%), but adding the NOK 349 subscription brings the total to NOK 586. Betalinger Plus therefore only pays off once card sales pass roughly NOK 50,000 a month. Most small businesses are fine starting without it. Terminal costs more upfront than Solo Lite, but you avoid needing a dedicated phone and an external printer.

SumUp processes Norwegian debit cards as Visa or Mastercard, not over BankAxept, which handled 49% of transactions with Norwegian cards in 2024 (Norges Bank). Customers notice no difference, but at very high card volume you should compare the total cost against a bank terminal. Read more in our guide to BankAxept, Visa and Mastercard.

Who is SumUp Terminal for?

  • Cafés and bakeries taking payment and printing receipts at the table or in the queue
  • Food trucks and market stalls that need 4G and paper receipts
  • Hairdressers, salons and clinics wanting payment, receipts and products on one device
  • Tradespeople who deliver and take payment on site
  • Small shops wanting a till, stock and reports without a full POS system

If you only need to take cards and always have your phone, Solo Lite is enough. If you run a fixed counter with lots of stock and several staff, SumUp Register may suit you better. Terminal sits in between: a complete till you can carry with you.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a phone or fixed internet to use SumUp Terminal?

No. Terminal has its own screen and a built-in 4G SIM with data, so it is online without a phone or fixed internet. If WiFi is available, it switches to the strongest network automatically.

Does SumUp Terminal have a built-in receipt printer?

Yes, a 58 mm thermal printer in the device itself. You print paper receipts or order tickets without an external printer, and customers can still choose a receipt by SMS or email.

How much does SumUp Terminal cost?

A one-off price for the device (check the current price, as it varies with promotions), then 1.49% per payment. No monthly fee and no contract. Betalinger Plus lowers the rate to 0.79% for a fixed monthly price.

Is there a monthly fee or contract with SumUp Terminal?

No. You pay a one-off sum for the device and then 1.49% per payment, so you pay nothing in months without sales. That makes Terminal well suited to seasonal and event selling. If you choose Betalinger Plus for a lower fee, you can switch back to the standard rate at any time.

What is the difference between SumUp Terminal and Solo Lite?

Solo Lite is a cheaper card reader that needs a phone or tablet and has no printer. Terminal works on its own with its own screen, a built-in 58 mm printer and its own 4G. If you only take cards via your phone, Solo Lite is enough. If you need paper receipts without extra equipment, Terminal is the right choice.

What is the difference between SumUp Terminal and SumUp Solo?

Both are standalone with their own screen and connection, but Solo has no printer. Terminal adds a built-in receipt printer plus product and order management on the device. Both charge the same fee with no contract.

Does SumUp Terminal support BankAxept?

No. Norwegian debit cards are processed as Visa or Mastercard, including contactless and Apple Pay and Google Pay. Customers notice no difference, but at very high card volume a bank terminal with BankAxept may be cheaper.
